Candy Day: October 12-13, 2012

Candy Day rolled around with 19 volunteer Lions all geared up for the two-day street fundraising. In spite of the cold Friday morning and the rainy Saturday afternoon, the yellow-vested
volunteers manned 3 fundraising outposts: street crossing on Army Trail-Bloomingdale Rd, North Ave-Bloomingdale Rd and Valli Produce storefront on North Ave.
Total take for the two-day street fundraising was $2,126.67. Beat, but happy and had fun, the volunteers were amazed at the open generosity of commuters and shoppers who were dropping
dollar bills into their plastic collection milk cans. One rookie Lion volunteer had the good fortune of receiving two $10 bills and a $20 bill in span of three hours walking the busy street crossing.
On Candy Day, the Lions were out on the street interacting with the community and making a difference for people with vision and hearing impairments.
We thank the following hardy volunteers who spent hours walking the busy street crossings and at the Valli Produce storefront: Lilia Narciso, Marilyn Liwanag, Freda Marzan, Susan Galvez, Jessica Cachola (Edwin’s daughter), Christine Tiojanco, Jake Retuta, Frank Bruno, Dee Javier, Henry Kare, Edwin Cachola, Jun Fajardo, Tom Rivera, Orly Liwanag, Jay Cadiz, Oscar Tiojanco, Willie Obando, Rudy Samson and Jess Galvez.

Walk To School Day 2012

The Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club helped celebrate
Walk To School Day on October 3, 2012 at the Glen Hill
Elementary School in Glendale Heights, IL. The club prepared
breakfast snacks, fruits and drinks for the more than 130
elementary school kids who walked to school with their parents.

Walk to School Day is an international event celebrated in
the USA, UK and Canada to welcome and encourage all
forms of active transportation to school. The Walk to
School website,, gives the
reasons for the celebration – safer and more accessible
streets, healthier habits and cleaner air.

The Glen Hill Elementary School administration prepared
a fun program of singing, dancing and exercise in the school
gym for the students. Teachers were on hand to greet and
welcome the parents.
