14 GHBLC Lions and friends of the club spent 2 hours of volunteer work at Feed My Starving Children on January 10 at the Aurora, IL facility, hand-packing meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. The meals are shipped in 70 countries around the world. The club donated $1,050 to LIF Camp Lions to sponsor two campers for a week of summer camp experience, fielded two teams at the annual District Bowling at the Brunswick XL Bowl in Naperville.

GHBLC 2014 Service Activities

Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club donated $2,000 for Philippine Typhoon Relief to aid the flood victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan in Central Philippines. The club donated $3,766 to Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).

Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club received the 2nd Club Excellence Award presented at the Eastern Region meeting on Feb. 5, 2014. The club donated $250 to Diabetes Awareness, provided free eye exams and prescription glasses to two residents.

12 members participated in the District 1-J Convention held at the Hilton/Lisle on April 4 – 6. The club performed a choral number at the Talent Show, the club donated a Wine Basket worth $175 for the Public Auction. Lion Jess Galvez received two awards during the convention banquet – a Foundation Fellow from LIF Director Lion Van Stone and District 1-J Distinguished Service award from DG Lion Mario Gumino.

The club held the 30th Charter Anniversary celebration on May 17, 2014 at the Medinah Shriners Center with more than 130 guests in attendance. A 54-page souvenir program was printed, 4 Melvin Jones Fellow were honored. PDG Lion Nancy Rex graced the celebration as the guest speaker. More then $10,000 were raised from the souvenir program ads and party tickets.

8 Lions attended the 97th Lions Clubs International Convention in Toronto, Canada. The Lions participated in the International Parade of Nations marching with the Illinois MD1 delegation, two club officers voted in the election of the International Directors and the 2nd Vice President of Lions Clubs International, PID Robert “Corlew”. The Lions cheered the installation of the newly-minted 2014 – 2015 International President Joe Preston.

The club held the first Nursing Home Visitation at the West Suburban Nursing Home in Bloomingdale, IL. 9 volunteer Lions helped the more than 35 nursing home residents enjoy bingo games and win bingo prizes provided by the Lions.

The club held the Annual Candy Day in warm September weather with 9 Lions and 3 family members doing the street and store front campaign. The club raised $2,319 for LIF Candy Day.

The club participated in the the celebration of Walk To School Day at the Glen Hill Elementary School in Glendale Heights, IL. Walk To School Day is a global event celebrated by communities from over 40 countries as they walk and bike to school on a single day. The event celebrates the health, learning and community benefits of walking. The club prepared breakfast snacks and drinks for the more than 140 school kids who walked to school with their parents, enjoyed an hour of singing and dancing at the school gym in celebration of the event.

The club’s 13th Peace Poster Contest was held Nov. 1, at the high-tech Marquardt District 15 Administration Center on Glen Ellen Rd. More than 90 art posters were submitted by students from Glenside Middle School, Marquardt Middle School and St. Matthew School on LCI’s contest theme of “Peace, Love and Understanding”. Cash prizes were awarded to the best Peace Poster from each school. Distrct 1-J Gov. Lion Chris Halsey was the guest speaker. Refreshments were served after the program.

The club held the 6th Holiday Caroling fundraising during the two weeks of December. More than 20 Lions and volunteer carolers made up the caroling group. The club raised more than $2,830 caroling 3 family gatherings, 3 business parties, 4 senior citizens residences, a church group and a Dinner with Santa at a middle school.
