CHEERS LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL 100 YEARS OF SERVICE
We hail Lions Clubs International celebration of 100 years of humanitarian service performed by 1.4 million members in 210 countries. Our small Lions Club is proud of the service contributions to the iconic milestone that makes the world a better and happier place to live.
Last Nov. 5, 2016, we held our 15th Peace Poster Contest at the Marquardt School Administration Center. 140 peace posters were submitted by students from 3 middle schools – Marquardt, Glenside and St. Matthews. A special awards day was held attended by parents, students, art teachers and school administrators. Prizes were awarded to the first prize winners from each school.
Every year in October, we partner with Glen Hill Elementary school to celebrate Walk To School Day, a community event that lauds the health benefits of exercise, walking & biking to school and the need for safer places to walk and bike to school. The club prepares breakfast treats and drinks for the 140 students who walk to school with their parents in celebration of the event.
The club participated in 2 Environmental Clean-ups last year – Adopt-A-Highway Clean-up at Brandon St in Glendale Heights, April 23 and at Timber Ridge Forest Preserve with the Bloomingdale Lions, April 30.
Partnering with the Glenside Public Library District, the club sponsored 3 Vision Screenings using Plusoptix Vision Screener. 66 children and adults were screened in July, Aug and Sept 2016 at the Glenside Public Library in Glendale Heights.
The club actively participates in Recycling used eyeglasses, hearing aids, ink cartridges, cell phones which are donated to Lions of IL Foundation. The donation helps support LIF’s various services and the vision and hearing programs for the poor. This year, the club donated 480 used eyeglasses, 66 used printer ink cartridges and 10 used hearing aids.
The club provides Free Eye Exam and Prescription Glasses to poor families, students and senior citizens. The club has helped more than 15 students of Glenbard West High School through LensCrafters OneSight Program.
The club participates in District 1-J Fundraising – Candy Day in October, District Bowling in January, Sight and Sound Sweepstakes in May, Camp Lions donations for the Summer Camps for the vision or hearing impaired youth and adults.
